The Denver Union Station Executive Oversight Committee (EOC), composed of RTD, the City and County of Denver, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Denver Regional Council of Governments, (collectively known as the EOC Agencies), has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Union Station Neighborhood Company (USNC). USNC was selected in November 2006 for exclusive negotiations to become the master developer of the Denver Union Station site.
With the signing of the LOI, the project can complete the Final Environmental Impact Statement, finalize a financing and governance structure and enter into a design-build contract for the redevelopment. Transit improvements and other public improvements including plazas and other public spaces, walkways, pedestrian connections and renovation of the historic station, can now proceed. “This is a major step with our partners toward completing this exciting project,” said Cal Marsella, RTD General Manager. “It helps ensure the transit elements are integrated as the cornerstone of the development.”
Denver Union Station, part of RTD’s FasTracks program, will serve as a multi-modal transportation hub for the region by integrating light rail, commuter rail, and intercity rail (Amtrak), as well as regional, express and local bus service, the 16th Street Mall shuttle, Downtown Circulator and intercity buses, taxies, bicycles and pedestrians.
The approved plan includes an at-grade, eight-track commuter rail station, relocation of RTD's regional bus facility below grade under 17th Street; and relocation of the light rail station at-grade to the Consolidated Mail Line (CML).
The 16th Street Mall Shuttle will continue to run in dedicated lanes along 16th Street and extend to the relocated light rail station. The new Downtown Circulator will include stops for easy commuter rail and light rail transfers. The plan also creates a number of new public spaces including plazas at Wynkoop, 17th Street, and 18th Street.
“The USNC’s plan for Denver Union Station will create a truly memorable and iconic place,” said Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. “It will be a model for transit-oriented development in our nation and a powerful engine for economic development in our region.”
